Used spectacles can be recycled to aid those in other parts of the world and Bridgend Lions are actively involved in the collection of used spectacles. These are then shipped free of charge by Parcel Force to Chichester Lions Club. We have recently sent over 2,000 pairs of spectacles for recycling. Any donations of spectacles can be delivered to Gwyn Evans Opticians, Wyndham Street, Bridgend. Please do not include cases (unless in very good condition) or loose lenses which have already been shaped to fit frames The spectacles are processed by Chichester Lions club members and other volunteers in their workshop. They use their considerable experience to select the items that are suitable for recycling and to sort them in preparation for onward transmission to Medico France in Le Havre. Medico France have the necessary equipment to clean and grade the spectacles ready for use in eye camps in Africa, India and Eastern Europe. Chichester Lions have recently developed, with the help of the Inside Out Trust, facilities for grading spectacles in the UK and have shipped directly to Ghana, Papua New Guinea, Nepal and recently to Nigeria. In each case, the glasses are sent directly to known or Lions club contacts. They have also developed contacts with individuals and charities based in the UK who are carrying out eye-camp projects overseas, who are able to use spectacles that Lions Clubs are recycling and supplying to them. For more information on how the spectacle collections are processed please see the website of Chichester Lions.
