One of our major fundraising events is the Annual Duck Race which is held on the River Ogmore, normally in September. To see photographs of recent Duck Races click here Thousands of yellow plastic ducks, each sponsored for £1 by members of the public, are released into the river at the Rhiw Bridge and “race” for a few hundred metres to our finishing post downstream as shown on the map below.
We record the first three of our numbered ducks past the post and the lucky sponsors win a cash prize. The 2011 Duck Race was due to be held on the 17th September but had to be cancelled for health and safety reasons. The weather and high level of the river prevented us from safely running the Duck Race. We apologise if you turned up to watch the race but as it is difficult to rearrange for another day we will be holding a draw later in the week. As usual, details of winners will be posted on this web site. The 2009 Duck Race was held in September 2009 when 4,000 ducks were set off down the Ogmore River creating quite a spectacle for those of the public watching the race. The weather was sunny after weeks of rain but the river had reduced in depth enough to ensure the race could take place. All ducks are retrieved from the river with the assistance of the 1092 Bridgend Air Training Corps canoe squad, whose young members are able count their voluntary time towards community service awards. We are indebted to them for helping to ensure that club members do not get too wet. With the help of The Princess of Wales Hospital and a number of local large retailers which grant us space to sell tickets we are normally able to raise about £3,500 from the event which helps to replenish our general charity account from which we fund a variety of local causes. We are always looking for other venues at which to sell tickets or for workplace contacts who could sell blocks of tickets. If you feel that you can help or would like to assist with sponsorship, please us our contact page Congratulations to the 2010 race winners: 1st prize (£300) - 955 - Mrs Walters of Margam 2nd prize (£150) - 2421 - Liz Hllier of South Cornelly 3rd prize (£75) - 992 - K. Williams of Lewistown Thank you to everyone who purchased tickets and to those venues that kindly allowed us to sell tickets throughout the summer.
